Cruise Through France: Food, Wine and Fascination!
As Audrey Hepburn said, "Paris is always a good idea." Then I add, "France is always a great idea!"
There is no better way to embrace the soul of France, while enjoying the comforts of a river cruise, where every moment is a perfect blend of history, local cuisine, wine culture, art, unique shopping experiences, and most importantly...fun!
From the vibrant streets of Paris to the vineyard-clad hills of Bordeaux, explore ancient landmarks, impressionist masterpieces, and charming villages along the way. Indulge in terrific French cuisine, sample fine wines from renowned regions, and discover hidden treasures in bustling markets and boutique shops. A river cruise promises a memorable journey as your floating hotel brings you to the must see cities of France.
Paris
The "City of Light" boasts not only iconic landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, the recently re-opened Notre-Dame Cathedral, and the Arc de Triomphe but also a rich culture. Stroll along the Seine River, passing by the Louvre Museum and Musee d’Orsay as you discover inviting brasseries, wine bars, cafes, trendy boutiques and local farmer's markets. Every time we visit Paris, we discover another wonderful site, restaurant, or experience.
Bordeaux
Renowned for its wine and architectural splendor, Bordeaux offers a journey through time. Visitors can admire the 18th-century façades lining the Place de la Bourse and delve into the city's wine production and trading past at the Port of the Moon. Enjoy world famous wines and elegant shopping as you explore this inviting city.
A favorite experience is strolling along the Garonne River at sunset and seeing the city lights reflected off the water. Definitely consider taking a guided tour of La Cite du Vin, an interactive wine museum, to give you a deeper appreciation for the region's rich winemaking history.
Saint-Émilion
Saint-Émilion is a medieval gem that feels like stepping back in time. When you visit, I recommend exploring the underground catacombs - really! The cool air and ancient carvings gives you a real sense of the town's history.
Standing inside the cavernous Monolithic Church is breathtaking. Its hard to believe such a massive limestone structure was carved by hand! Afterward, treat yourself to a wine tasting at a local wine cellar that dates back centuries and enjoy the rolling vineyard views while you sip.
Rouen
Rouen captivates you with its Gothic architecture, especially the stunning Rouen Cathedral, which seems even more magnificent in person than in Monet’s paintings. Wandering through the medieval streets of the Old Town is like stepping into a storybook. Don't forget to stop at the exact spot where Joan of Arc was tried and later executed to get a true sense of the city’s deep historical roots.
Along the way, you can't resist popping into a charming café for a fresh croissant and later enjoying a meal at a gastropub. The unique shops lining the streets add to the town's vibrant, yet timeless, atmosphere and it's hard to resist buying a few souvenirs.
Giverny
Giverny feels like stepping into a living painting. Visiting Monet's former home, where he spent over 40 years of his life, is incredibly moving. Wander through the gardens that inspired so many of his masterpieces—the vibrant colors of the flowers and the serene beauty of the water lily pond are just as captivating as his art. Walking across the Japanese bridge is a surreal moment, and you can vividly imagine Monet painting this peaceful scene. If you love Impressionist art as much as I do, take time to explore the Museum of Impressionism nearby.
Arles
Arles is another city proud of it's artistic heritage, and you will feel like you have stepped into Van Gogh's world. When you walk through the city, imagine you are following in his footsteps. There are many places that inspired his work (do you recognize the yellow café?). If you have time, see some of his masterpieces at the Vincent Van Gogh Foundation. The laid-back vibe of Arles’s lively squares will draw you in, so take time browsing the charming local shops and enjoying a coffee at a café while soaking in the city's relaxed atmosphere.
Avignon
Avignon transports you back to medieval times with its incredible history and architecture. Standing before the majestic Palace of the Popes, you can't help but be awestruck by its size and grandeur. Walking along the well-preserved ramparts surrounding the Old Town will give you stunning views of the city and a true sense of its past. At Les Halles, the lively covered market, explore the stalls bursting with fresh produce, fragrant herbs, and local specialties. Sampling Provence cuisine, from a hearty ratatouille to delicate lavender honey, paired with a glass of regional wine, makes this visit a dream for any food lover.
Lyon
Lyon will captivate you with its perfect mix of gastronomy and history. Strolling through Vieux Lyon, lose yourself in the charm of its cobblestone streets and Renaissance architecture. You will really enjoy seeing magnificent landmarks like the Basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the Lyon Cathedral. One highlight of any visit is exploring Les Halles de Lyon-Paul Bocuse, where the vibrant market stalls overflow with regional specialties and fresh ingredients.
After all this exploring, be sure to relax at one of several cozy, family-owned bouchon to savor traditional Lyonnaise dishes like quenelles and saucisson brioche—each bite a delicious tribute to the city’s culinary heritage.
And there you have it—my picks for the eight best cities to visit on a river cruise through France!
What makes these destinations even more enjoyable is with effortless travel between them. Relaxing on deck as the stunning French landscape drifts by is truly a special experience.
