Budapest, Hungary - A grand and noble city!
Split by the Danube River into the Buda side and the Pest side, this is a city where rich history and stunning architecture meet a vibrant culture. Whether you're wandering through its historic streets, visiting noted landmarks, or enjoying panoramic views, this beautiful city offers something for everyone.
Below are 11 terrific things to see and do in Budapest. We enjoyed every one of them during a recent Small Group Escorted Tour throughout Eastern Europe. And Hungarian food is excellent too!
#1 - Hungarian Parliament Building
Dominating the Pest side of the Danube, the Hungarian Parliament Building is one of the largest and most iconic parliament buildings in the world. It’s a terrific example of Gothic Revival architecture with its ornate spires and a central dome. Take the self-guided audio tour and wander through its grand halls and gain a bit of insight into the country’s political history. This is a must see!
#2 - Széchenyi Chain Bridge
This was the first permanent bridge to span the Danube, connecting the Buda and Pest sides of the city and symbolized the unification of Budapest. It offers stunning views of the river and surrounding architecture, and is especially enchanting when lit up at night, making it a perfect spot for an evening stroll and photo op.
#3 - St. Stephen’s Basilica:
Named after Hungary’s first king, St. Stephen’s Basilica is one of the most important religious sites in the country. Its impressive dome dominates the skyline, and inside, you’ll find beautiful mosaics and the mummified hand of St. Stephen, a revered relic. Climb to the top of the basilica’s cupola for panoramic views that stretch across the city.
#4 - Buda Castle:
A symbol of Hungary’s rich history, Buda Castle (on the Buda side of course) has been the seat of Hungarian kings since the 13th century. The castle complex is home to several museums, including the Hungarian National Gallery and the Budapest History Museum. It’s a long walk up the hill, so take the funicular (and its fun)! Explore the grand courtyards for a journey through history and enjoy the terraces…they provide some of the best views of the city.
#5 - Hungarian National Gallery:
Located within the Buda Castle complex, the Hungarian National Gallery houses an extensive collection of Hungarian art, including the works of many 19th and 20th century Hungarian artists. We believe the gallery offers a deep dive into the country’s artistic heritage and is a must see for art lovers. I was thoroughly impressed!
#6 - Fisherman’s Bastion:
Perched on the Buda side of the city, Fisherman’s Bastion looks like something out of a fairy tale with its turrets, terraces, and white stone walls. Built in the 19th century, and a short walk from Buda castle, it offers the best panoramic views of Budapest, particularly of the Parliament and the Danube. This is also a must see, and a great spot to capture selfies and take pictures.
#7 - Matthias Church:
Adjacent to Fisherman’s Bastion, Matthias Church is a stunning example of Gothic architecture with a colorful tiled roof and a richly decorated interior. The church has played a significant role in Hungary’s history, hosting coronations of Hungarian kings.
#8 - Central Market Hall:
This vibrant market, housed in a grand 19th-century building, is the largest and oldest indoor market in Budapest. You can explore stalls brimming with fresh produce, Hungarian spices like paprika, traditional foods, and artisan crafts. This is where I stocked up on 5 kilos of paprika (no judging please).
Head up to the second-floor food stands and eateries to sample some local delicacies. There are additional vendors selling clothing, leather and jewelry. It can get hot up there, and crowded, so avoid during peak lunch hours. But absolutely worth a visit!
#9 - Thermal Baths:
Budapest is famous for its thermal baths - the two most popular are the Szechenyi Baths and the Gellért Baths. They offer a range of pools (indoor and outdoor), saunas, and steam rooms with interiors of ornate tiles, columns, and stained glass.
Szechenyi is the larger of the two, and ideal for socializing. Visitors often play chess on large chessboards on the pool edge.
Gellert is elegant and serene, and a masterpiece of art nouveau architecture. It is perfect for those looking for a more peaceful and luxurious experience.
While thermal baths are not our “thing”, some friends from our group tour visited and they absolutely loved the experience.
#10 - Hungarian State Opera House:
This neo-Renaissance masterpiece, completed in 1884, is an architectural gem with lavish interiors adorned with marble, gilded decorations, and frescoes. Performances run year-round, if interested.
We thoroughly enjoyed one of the daily guided tours. Tickets sell out so be sure to reserve in advance!
#11 - Danube Evening Dinner Cruise:
Lastly, an experience not to be missed is an evening dinner cruise along the Danube River. Enjoy a terrific dinner along with live music as you glide past illuminated landmarks such as the Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and the Chain Bridge. The cruise takes about 2.5 hours and is one of the most romantic and memorable ways to experience the city, particularly at sunset.
These experiences offer a unique glimpse into the city's storied past, vibrant present and captivating culture. Whether you’re a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking for beautiful views, Budapest will surely leave you with fond memories and a desire to return. It certainly did for us. Enjoy!
